Nature Appreciation Using Art and Science

This is a class I designed based on Aldous Huxley's book, Island. I call it the "Pala" Method of Nature Appreciation.

You will select an area for study, in your own yard, a local park, and we will study it from an ecological science perspective: what are the plants? What is the soil like? What is the ecology? Then you will study this same area from the perspective of an artist meaning you will sketch it, paint it, write a poem/song about it, or any medium you are comfortable with. Students have even developed a dance in the class. It's pretty amazing.

Generally this course is one month, two weeks on the "science part" then two weeks on the "art part" but it can be extended as requested.
