Why Do We Learn American Sign Language?

1- To learn to communicate effectively and become a more valuable member of your community or place of work, or to be there for specific friend/family member who may be Hard of Hearing or Deaf.

2- Integrate into a new culture and learn how to speak “English” using your hands.

3- To open your mind to new horizons and ideas and to learn new words altogether in this unique language structure.

In this class I will offer a new outlook on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community. A new dynamic and approach in which students acquire new grammar, language structure, and understanding of the interpretation of English and its idioms and indirectness. In addition, the course we offer provides students a unique opportunity to learn about the Deaf culture through its very direct language structure.

Our online course is flexible for all learners at every level. The teacher will evaluate what skills you may have already acquired, if any, and will teach you based off of what you already know or want to learn.

Important Information About This Course

This course will consist of the following...

1- This course will start out with the teaching of the American Sign Language alphabet as well as finger-spelling. The course will then go into basic words in order to have simple conversations.

2- After mastering the skill of finger-spelling and basic conversation we will begin practicing more advanced concepts of American Sign Language. Students will learn how to interpret a song of their choice.

3- By the end of the course the students will know how to carry on a basic conversation as well as the understanding of ASL structure. Students will have mastered Signing an entire song in American Sign Language.

Textbook for this course is encouraged but optional: The Gallaudet Dictionary Of American Sign Language

**You will notice this course has three days and times for when it is available. You can choose one day a week or all three. You will never fall behind and each lesson is adapted to benefit each level of proficiency. This course is available multiple days and times a week to better fit your schedule.

Teacher's Bio: Ms. Brittany Buchanan has studied ASL since her freshman year of High School where she first discovered her passion for American Sign Language and Teaching. Since, she has earned a degree in American Sign Language Interpreting as well as another degree in Exceptional Student Education. In addition to that, she has ESOL endorsements and over 200 credit hours of courses in Early Childhood Education, Exceptional Education, and a plethora of other Educational courses. Ms. Buchanan has gained her field and hands on experience through being a live in caretaker for exceptional students, free lance Interpreting and teaching private Sign Language courses.
