Film Fundamentals

Welcome to Film Fundamentals!

By the end of this six week course, you will gain knowledge about the elements of film, be able to critically analyze the medium, and develop a greater appreciation of the art of film.

This is a beginner level course, with no previous knowledge needed!

Course materials required:

-Notebook
-Writing instrument

The class structure will be a combination of lecture on film elements and group discussions in a zoom call. In addition, students will be assigned films to watch outside of class and submit critiques on selected scenes.

Course Outline

Week 1: Framing
Week 2: Editing
Week 3: Sound/ Music
Week 4: Color/Lighting
Week 5: Scripts and scenes
Week 6: CGI/special effects and acting

Some of the movies we will be reviewing are: The Matrix, Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Fight Club, Citizen Kane, Office Space, Akira, Fight Club, Star Wars, Parasite, American Psycho, Pulp Fiction, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Big Lebowski, The Shining, Scream, Clockwork Orange, and The Godfather.

Students will also be invited to submit scenes from films of their choice for analysis and discussion in class.

Teacher's Bio: A passionate location sound mixer, producer, and voice actor, Thomas Wynn has been heavily involved in the independent film/commercial scene in New York City for the past 8 years. Some of the projects he is known for are "White Girl" by Elizabeth Wood and "Can't Stop Won't Stop: A Bad Boy Story" with P. Diddy by Daniel Kaufman. He is really excited to share his knowledge in a fun relatable way so that you can learn quickly at a deep level of understanding. His favorite styles of film are animations and comedy.
Style of Offering: I will have a lecture prepared,but will be very interactive answering any questions and having group discussions as well
