The Art of Filmmaking and Cultivating Awareness (one on one)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course combines film history and filmmaking technique to explore medium as an art form and a tool for personal expression. We will examine the ways that filmmaking helps heighten self awareness and the ways that great films help elevate human consciousness.

WHO THE COURSE IS FOR

This course is designed for anyone exploring: the art of making films, the technical and psychological hurtles of low-budget productions, the political nature of the film industry and the role of film in helping to shape history.

Those who are figuring out what they want to communicate to the world may find this holistic approach useful. Students will be encouraged to cultivate their broader artistic vision to build a foundation upon which to build their body of work.

OVERVIEW

Students will learn an array of filmmaking strategies relating to each aspect of the medium by exploring the techniques used in early Hollywood films. Each student will create several short films to demonstrate what they’ve learned.

Online film education often focuses on how to sell scripts or make it in the industry while university film departments are left to study the art of cinema through an academic lens. This may be why most of the great artistic achievements in film happened in the past.

For decades the emphasis has been on commercial viability. A reasonable temptation, but the real alchemical gold for humanity are films that change people's lives and alter the way we view the world.

This course will help filmmakers evaluate their motivations and investigate their core beliefs in order to develop an overall sense of direction with their work. Examples from film history will be used to inspire ideas and help students map out the previously inhabited territory they are entering.

  • Hands-on filmmaking exercises will be assigned and discussed as they progress.

  • The course will provide an overview of many socially conscious and artistically significant films.

  • We will discuss the evolving economic and political realities that filmmakers face

  • A look at some of the tools artists develop to face their most difficult challenges, creative, psychological and professional.

Rather than approaching filmmaking from a career perspective or viewing it strictly as an art form or political tool, we will examine instances where all of these impulses merged into one and inspired the world.

Teacher's Bio: Malachi’s first film won the award for Best Experimental Film at the PhiladelphiaInternational Film Festival. His first feature credit is for directing andediting Limón: A Life Beyond Words, (www.limon.tv)which won three awards and aired on public television nationwide in the US, Canadaand Mexico. The film has screened at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, LincolnCenter, The Kennedy Center, The National Portrait Gallery, The Pompidou Centerand the Palacio de Bellas Artes.
