Conducting Research: Making the Best of a Bad Situation

SORTING OUT A MESS

There is perhaps no task students find more overwhelming than having to complete a research project, but there are ways of making the assignment—if not easier—at least more productive.

This six-session course intends to introduce a logical and methodical process resulting in a better end product. The course will break research and its writing into several steps, and while no materials are required, it is recommended that those enrolled bring a current or potential research assignment to the course.

Topics covered will include:

  1. Understanding writing basics, research, and sources

  2. Evaluating and understanding secondary sources

  3. Gathering potential sources

  4. Writing the first draft and a rough draft

  5. Organizing the material used

  6. Writing the final draft

  7. Finalizing the project

Teacher's Bio: As a lit major in college, I usually found myself writing from four to six major papers needing documentation each semester, and by enduring that grind, I eventually developed a system that proved a more efficient use of the time spent. Since then, I’m constantly advocating that research is one undertaking where the phrase “work smart, not hard” is an absolute.
