The Medieval and Renaissance Apothecary

This series of classes will be on Herbs and Herbal Lore.

Everything from making your own cosmetics to aphrodisiacs will be covered. In this time of staying at home, growing your own herbs and learning to cook with herbs and make your own medicines could be a useful skill for many people.

  • Week 1 is general information about herbs in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, evolution of herbal use will be covered.

  • Week 2 will be about Medieval and Renaissance cosmetics and we will make a recipe.

  • Week 3 will be making herbal beads, this is good for kids to watch and you can do this at home with them.

  • Week 4 is all about Aphrodisiacs and we will make one.

  • Week 5 will be Medicinal Medicine in the past has changed radically from century to century, we will talk about natural remedies. If you have sensitive skin or other issues with chemicals, consider making your own products!

Teacher's Bio: I began working with herbs some 30 years ago and have enjoyed working with essential oils as well. I make my own creams and lotions and some medicinal items for everyday use.
Style of Offering: This will be a lecture and demonstration class with recipes for the students to use at home. A list of herbs and a list of herbs NOT to use will also be provided. How the Medieval people used herbs in their everyday life can be interesting and may spark a new hobby for people.
